Steps to Take
Find sustainable toys for children that will last generations longer than the cheap plastic stuff
Stop using pharmaceutical drugs and chemicals and go natural (if you can)
Use natural materials from a sustainable source over synthetic materials. The more natural a product is - the less pollution has usually incurred in its production.
Only purchase wood products that come from sustainable forests. Ensure that the product has been accredited by an international agency such as ANSI
Don't throw something away just because you've outgrown that particular style—thrift stores such as Goodwill or the Salvation Army will be more than happy to take items in serviceable condition
Buy Fair Trade products
Repair, instead of consigning slightly damaged goods to the rubbish heap
Support independent artisans
Make your own Christmas and birthday presents
Purchase locally manufactured goods. These cost less in fossil fuels, but also have the advantage of supporting local manufacturing.
Use alternatives to harsh chemical cleaning products
Buy organic products
Support environmentally conscious businesses - investigate to ensure they really do what they say
Purchase reusable products rather than ones you only use once. ie. a plastic water bottle
Purchase refills of products as this uses less packaging
Look for the Humane Cosmetics Standard (HCS) label on products to check they are cruelty free. It is the world's only international standard for cosmetic or toiletry products that are not animal tested
Purchase clothes made from organically produced materials
