Steps to Take
Establish a Transition Town project in your community
Ask your council if they have joined the Communities for Climate Protection New Zealand (CCP-NZ) programme. If they have, get involved. If they haven't, lobby for action.
Drive at the speed limit. This could save your life and someone else's plus reduce your fuel use
If the local coffee shop you love doesnt sell organic fair trade coffee and tea, start asking politely for them to introduce it
Make investment decisions based on environmental and human rights
If your community does not have an active Community Watch or Community Support group, start one up
Visit your local council website to find out what community projects are underway and get involved
Find out about the cultures and customs of the people in your local community.
Adopt an old person. Some older people are lonely and socially isolated. By volunteering your time you can make a positive impact on their life
Become a volunteer refugee support worker
Invite your neighbour over for coffee, as a way to get to know the people in your community
Host an international exchange student in your home. This is a unique way of learning about another culture
Get involved with an international aid agency such as Oxfam
Vote at national and local elections. Your view counts.
Make political choices based on parties policies and the ability of those policies to enhance the environment and local communities.
Learn to speak a foreign language
Smile at people as you walk down the street
Give blood
Let your family know if you would like your organs to be donated when you die
Eat at least one meal a day with your family
Learn about the history of the place you live. This will make you more connected with it.
Educate yourself about local and global issues by reading or taking a course. Think critically.
Become educated about the local and national political system.
